Parents’
concerns heard at special education meeting
Monday, December 4, 2006
-- Michelle Strutzenberger
Several parents of children with learning differences
met recently with Principal Ray Hendriks and the
resource team at Rhema Christian School to discuss
how the needs of their children are being met
and how the resource team can further expand services
to prepare for the future.
“I find it very encouraging
as a parent that the school is concerned about
the well-being of my children. They’re interested,
and they want to improve services,” says
Carol Fisher, a parent. “To invite me to
the meeting showed they value my input.”
She adds that the meeting contributed
to the sense that parents and staff are “working
together as a team.”
While the meeting touched on sensitive
issues, it was conducted well by Ray, says Carol.
“I felt that Rhema’s verse for this
year was honoured.” She refers to Colossians
3:12, which speaks about the need to treat one
another with respect and kindness.
Christine Leney, who also attended
the meeting, says she appreciated the opportunity
to meet with other parents and hear their stories.
“[The meeting] helped us identify one another,”
she says. “There was a lot of positive sharing.”
She says the meeting facilitated
connections between families which has led to
the sharing of ideas and strategies for handling
similar issues.
The recent meeting was held to
allow a forum for parents to express their concerns
about the needs of the students in the program,
particularly as it grows.
A variety of topics were discussed,
including the need for increased training for
teachers and more resources.
Carol explains the challenges of
her position. “As a parent of two children
with learning differences I have to try to be
diplomatic but still maintain my Christian witness
and at the same time advocate for my children
because I know them best.”
She appreciates the overall
welcome and acceptance that their children have
experienced at the school and is looking forward
to working with the resource team in supporting
her children and helping others.
