Yuck! Yuck! Yuck!

YUCK! YUCK! YUCK! We had visitors at Rhema Christian School today. That of course is not the usual response we give to visitors, but in this case quite appropriate as the Rhema Science Club hosted Peterborough Green Up on Thursday, April 13.

Hot off the trails of an award winning Regional Science Fair at Trent University, Rhema Science Club along with grades 1, 2/3, and grade 6 were involved in "hands-on" science all day long.

The grade one class and primary science club members were visited by a few puppets including Herman the Worm who popped out of the large black composter and talked to the class about waste issues such as reduction, re-use, recycling and composting. Grade One had the opportunity to plant peas in composted dirt....otherwise known as "worm poop"! Yucky! Exciting!

Be prepared for a new group of recyclers coming home!

Grade 2/3 and junior science club members enjoyed a yucky afternoon of "hands on " garbage auditing". Armed with rubber gloves, buckets and weigh scales the students sifted and sorted through "in class" pails of garbage. Items were sorted, charted, graphed, math lessons appeared (and it was fun) the students were engaged all afternoon! Comments were insightful, hands flew into the air and questions abounded. Once the audit was completed the students gathered round and interacted with "red wigglers" and the Vermi Composter. No worm puppets for these students, they had the live version! Red wigglers are worms who are active in the composting process. Beware, if something is moving in the lunch box, a visitor may have hitched a ride home! YUCKY!

Upstairs in Grade Six where the Matter and Energy unit has been well under way, Krista Campbell from Green Up conducted an Energy Conservation workshop and discussion. The most "YUCKY" thing according to student Zach Garland is the unbelievable amount of money we have to pay for monthly energy costs. Look for grade six students coming home to darker homes as they strive to decrease the monthly costs .....maybe a few less video games will be on as well!

Thank you to Paula, Ava, and Krista from Peterborough Green Up for our YUCKY day. It’s not too often a student can go home and tell their parents how much they enjoyed a yucky day at school.
