The Space
Mouse
Friday, November 18, 2005 - L. Mostow

On Friday November 11, 2005 a big
truck came to visit Rhema Christian
School's parking lot and all the students.
It's what was in the truck that was
important. It was Tom Hanks' Space
Mouse.
To celebrate Disney's 75 anniversary,
they took different actors and asked
them what they would like their mouse
to be. Well Tom Hanks had talked to
James Birrel who was a boy fighting
Neroblastoma cancer and James had
really liked the movie Apollo 13 and
was really interested in space. So
Tom Hanks
said that his buddy James was really
into space, so he wanted a space mouse.
Now when James died they made a fund
called The James Birrel Fund which
goes toward neroblatoma cancer research
and Tom Hanks donated his Space Mouse
to the fund and the fund auctioned
it off.
A drug store bought it and sent it
to sick kids' hospital for a permanent
viewing, but first it was exhibited
at the home depot in Peterborough
and Chapters. The Birrels are currently
a part of Rhema and their kids
attend.
For more information about James
there is a book called, "You
can't let cancer ruin your day"
available at Emmaus Christian book
store.
