The Cenotaph
Friday,
November 18, 2005 - L. Mostow
There was a ceremony on November
11, 2005 at the Peterborough cenotaph
for all the veterans in Peterborough
from World War II. The grades six, seven
and eight classes from Rhema Christian
School walked down to see the Remembrance
Day service at the cenotaph. In the
cenotaph there is 848 names carved into
the stone. Some veterans walked down
the streets in a parade that everyone
enjoyed.Then different veterans came
up to speak and there were some songs
sung. "Here we stand on the eleventh
day of the eleventh hour." We all
were silent. Then everyone sang another
song and it all ended. After, I talked
to a veteran named Wally Smith.
"Back in my day there would
be no students at this service. Even
when the government declared it a
holiday, very rarely there was a couple
students. Today we have more students
then any of the years that I remember."
Everyone else I talked to agreed
with me. "A lot of people."
