Armed
Forces Members Bring Perspectives
On Peacekeeping

For over an hour-and-a-half
the upper grade students of Rhema
Christian School recently enjoyed
a rare glimpse into the experiences
of Canada's military.
Sgt. Carol Lapensee demonstrated
the use of specialized clothing designed
for deployment in extreme weather
conditions, while Cptn. Lyle Read
shared a typical ration lunch with
a student volunteer.
"The food was pretty good"
says James, a grade 7 student. James
admits that he's a picky eater and
wouldn't want to eat army food every
day.
"The fruit cocktail was the
best part of the meal," recalls
James.
Several students took advantage to
ask questions of the other Armed Forces
members which included M.W.O. Bill
Moore, Sgt. Wayne Walsh, Sgt. Perry
Hughes and Cpl. Sean Easton. All members
spoke frankly about their experiences
in such countries as Bosnia, Yugoslavia
and Cyprus.
Several members of the visiting Canadian
Forces unit are visiting area schools
and participating in community events
around Ontario before their upcoming
deployment to Afghanistan.
The visit was organized through the
Peterborough County O.P.P. and coordinated
locally by Const. Greg White.
