Teachers Met, New Classrooms Discovered

Officially, Rhema Christian School doesn’t start until Tuesday, September 7, but if you were driving by the school this past Wednesday night, you’d have thought the students, teachers and parents got a head start on the year. The school was holding its annual “Meet the Teacher” night; a well attended evening each and every year. Amidst hot dogs, the dunk tank and recounted summer stories the event was a success.

Each year, Rhema Christian School’s Promotion Committee plans the event for the benefit of the entire school population. “Meet the Teacher night is important to building a sense of community within the school”, says Irene Belsey, Board Rep for the committee. “In most cases, it has been several months since many families have seen one another and this night helps people to catch up and socialize outside of the normally busy first day of school. Students as well as their parents have an opportunity to see their new class, renew friendships with classmates and meet their new teacher.”

This year, Meet the Teacher night was essential. With one new teacher, three teachers returning from maternity leave, two new classrooms as well as moving a number of the classes within the school buildings, it was beneficial to see the event occur once again. “There were a great number of the Promotion Committee members onsite to ensure a smooth and well planned evening.” Mrs. Belsey offered. “Katharina Eagleson (Promotion Committee Chair), Charlotte Baker, Irene Rennick, Bonnie Elgeti, Kathryn Dykstra (Staff Rep), Judy Ufkes, Michelle Rozema and Julie Huschlitt all participated in the planning and implementation of the event.”

“The Promotion Committee will spend some time reviewing the evening, then move onto the next occasion,” stated Belsey. “This is only one of a number of social affairs Promotion handles each year. Each is designed to enhance a spirit of community among our families while promoting the school outside of the membership. Two of the other events we conduct annually are the Fellowship Dinner and Grandparent’s Day. We are also responsible for providing refreshments for Society Membership meetings twice a year. Additionally, we invite local Pastors to the school for a Pastor’s Lunch once every two years.”

Review of past events has shown a change in event scheduling for the Promotion Committee this year. “We’ve moved the Fellowship Dinner from the normal January, February slot to November,” explained Irene. “Twice in the last few years, inclement weather forced a rescheduling of this event and created conflicts with some of our supporting churches’ calendar of events. November seems to be a relatively quiet time for our community. We’ve moved this popular social event to a more predictable time period in terms of the weather.”

“This year’s Promotion Committee is short at least one member,” Irene shared. “We are interested in someone that likes to work with a team, plan and implement social occasions and has some time to invest into our school community.”
